Sandcastles… School…

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

We’d all like to continue building sandcastles, but reality is quickly closing in. School starts for us the day after Labor Day. Thankfully, we still have time to play around in the sand before we have to shake off our beach towels and return to real life.

If you didn’t win the sandcastle contest this summer, there’s time to practice.  Look at this video to see what can be built. Pretty lph_sandcastleimpressive..

World's first sand hotel, Weymouth beach

If your kids are already in school, flip through your summer photos and pull out a favorite. Send it out to friends and relatives to remind them of the fun you had this summer.

Put your photo on our folded photo card, like the one above. You can order it for a horizontal or vertical photograph. If you don’t want to glue on the pictures, we’ll do it for you. If you want the photograph printed right on the card, we can do that too. Just upload your photograph on our site.

Easier than building a sandcastle, that’s for sure.

Bouncing Baby Buggy

fhp_greenbuggy_text

The history of the baby buggy goes way back 300 years. Even back then, every mother enjoyed a stroll in the sunshine with her baby, but it wasn’t always as easy as it is today.

It is said that William Kent, a garden engineer, invented the first baby buggy for the third Duke of Devonshire. It even had springs so the baby could ride in comfort while pulled by a goat!

The buggy used to be large and cumbersome. It wasn’t until a daughter complained to her father about lugging her stroller from America to England that a collapsible one was invented.

Our baby buggy is one of the original designs of Letters from Lilly and used for expected little boys and girls alike. It’s wonderful for the baby showers when you don’t know what to expect! Available on all our stationery products.

P.S. Yes, this photograph is Lilly, at 5 months.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

fhp_santa_textDuring this week of Christmas, we at Letters from Lilly, wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday.

Thank you for another year full of creativity, growth, and sheer delight for sharing your personal celebrations with us.

We appreciate every occasion that you allow us to help you announce to your family and friends.

May you all continue to celebrate the positive accomplishments in life and focus on the good, the real, and the happy times shared with loved ones.

Take this time to bake cookies, make ornaments, and give the gift of time to your children. Here is a fun activity any age will enjoy;

Recipe for Reindeer Food:

1 cup oatmeal

1/2 cup flour

1/4 cup rice

1/8 cup raisins

1 T silver and gold glitter

3 mini carrots, sliced

Put all ingredients together in a ziplock bag, take outside at dusk on the 24th of December. Sprinkle on the ground, on the side of your house where there is a chimney in sight. The glitter will attract Santa’s reindeer and will give them something to snack on while Santa fills the stockings… with care.

Autumn Holiday Card Tips

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

fhp_sagewreath_textlph_sagewreathJust as April showers bring May flowers, autumn leaves falling bring… snowflakes, holidays, and the fun of holiday cards.

I bet when you read the words fun and holiday cards, you let out a little bit of a sigh.

Admit it, it’s a project. It’s not easy to keep up on the list and addresses, let alone the card and don’t even mention the photo.

Come on, I know what happens when you get the family together for the (dreaded) holiday photo session.

It’s something like this… you say at breakfast, “Honey, the sun is shining, we should really get the kids out and try to get a photo for our holiday card.” Then he grunts, almost like you did a few sentences ago when I first brought it up. The kids come in the room and your husband says, “Mom wants to take the holiday photo card today.” Immediately the kids are on the floor, withering around like earthworms freshly pulled from the earth.spv_sagewreath

So, before I take this too far and you just click away from my blog entirely, let me tell you how we can help at Letters from Lilly.

First, I should tell you, I am NOT available for the family session that needs to happen to get the photo, but I can help with the card.

We have made some exciting changes with our card selection since last season.

As you may know, our folded photo cards come in horizontal and vertical. But, did you know that we now offer photo cards with the photo printed directly on the card?gf_sagewreath1 We have the flat photo card shown on the upper left of this post. It’s flat, white and it comes with all the designs we offer.

We also have the popular cards we have offered for years, which are also available on a white stock that has the photo printed right on the card.

A very unique way to send a photo of your family is to use our gatefold, shown to the right, with your photo affixed in the center of the card.

1. Order early- There are LOTS of options for you to select from this season. I know, it’s still October, but if you get it going now, you can get them ordered and stop the children from groaning, the husband from huffing, and yes, you from sighing. We all love getting them, order early so that you can actually enjoy the process of sending a note with them.

2. Keep it simple - Whatever you choose, you can upload your photo right on our site. We’ll print it and stick it on the card, we’ll print it right on the paper…whatever makes the process easier for you. See all the options by clicking here.

3. Check it off as completed - OK, if you’ve thrown in the towel on the photo, just choose our fold over note shown below with a nice holiday greeting and skip the photo for a year.

No, don’t really do that…everyone likes the photos. Even you do, admit it.

Smocking Plaid to Roxy Plaid

Monday, September 21st, 2009

I’m not in denial. lpv_bluedressI know my smocking days are gone.

Gone as in G-O-N-E. There is not one smocked dress left in Lilly’s closet.

Today was picture day at school. For years, the smocked dresses were Lilly’s favorites and I have oodles of her school pictures to prove it. You can see on the Letters from Lilly site that I loved those days gone by. Last night she picked out her outfit and although I had a flashback of smocked dresses, reality came in with, “I’ll wear my pink Abercrombie top and my Roxy plaid skirt with my black leggings.”

It sounds horrible and ten years ago, the mere suggestion would have made my skin crawl (and Lilly’s too for that matter).  But, no surprise, her outfit today was quite cute and appropriate for a 7th grade school photo.1015412l1

Smocking has been around probably as long as stitching has been. It’s an art really. Very small stitches are sewn together and gathered to make intricate and ornamental patterns. The dress Lilly is wearing above shows smocking across the front with tiny red flowers.

So even though she wasn’t wearing smocking today, hardly appropriate for a girl who is just shy of 13, I love the photo that came home on her student ID today. The baby teeth have been replaced by adult teeth, complete with braces, and Converse now take the place of the patent leather shoes. She’s grown up for sure, now it’s my turn.

Order our blue dress stationery for your little girl now, while you can. She’ll grow up in a blink and rather than talking with you after school, she’ll be texting you from the next room. Did I just admit that?

Sea Star by the Seashore

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

With over 1,800 species, you can see all kinds of different sea stars in waters all over the world.  These creatures that bring wonder along our salty seashores can live up to 35 years, weigh up to 11 pounds, and measure up to 24 centimeters in width.

Relating more to sand dollars and sea urchins, they aren’t fish, which is why they should be referred to as sea stars, rather than starfish. With no blood supply or brain, they slowly move about the ocean floor with their five arms,  covered with suction cups using them to eat their prey of oysters and clams.

One has to look carefully in the tide pools to see sea stars in our local waters. They camouflage themselves so well, they are a treasure of life in our own backyard.

Letters from Lilly has our own sea star that is on all our products and shown here on our new flat photo card.  Share a photo of your summer holiday with family and friends.  As always, you can order matching return address stickers to go along with the card and the lining (that is always included on all our orders).

Darling Dolls and Bountiful Boys

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

I’m always looking for something funny to give friends to pass the time when they are awaiting the new love of their life.  These paper dolls are sure to get a giggle from the gals at a baby shower and might even help make bedrest a little entertaining.

But once that little bundle of joy arrives, there will be no time for paper dolls.  Reality arrives without warning and all the sudden we wonder ‘what exactly did we DO all day’ without this little being demanding every second of our waking AND sleeping moments.

Make your announcement with style using our maryjanes for a girl or red wagon for a boy.  Perhaps you are lucky enough to get T-W-O or … hold your breath… T-H-R-E-E!  Whatever the case, Letters from Lilly has the announcement and stationery to fit your growing family. Now’s probably not the right time to mention that you’ll need to write thank you notes for all those gifts…
