Paper Dresses Seen at the Oscars?

Monday, February 28th, 2011

note_fivedresses_textIt’s the morning after the Oscars and everywhere you turn people are talking about who and what they saw last night on television, specifically at the Oscars.

This would be the ideal time for me to disclose the fact that I never even turned them on.

Nope, not a glimpse. I didn’t have big plans that kept me away. I have just never found the flame that burns within to watch hours of people giving awards. Dare I say it’s a little slow for me.

What I will admit to is looking at the pretty dresses. I’m not as interested in who wore the dress, but I do like to see them.  I enjoy the party, the dress up, the glitz and glitter and all that goes along with the g-o-i-n-g to the Oscars. Perhaps if I were invited to attend, I might pay better attention to folks getting trophies.collarjpg

So on that note of dresses, I’m sharing a fabulous article that was submitted to me by one of my favorite customers in northern California. It’s about a display of PAPER dresses and these are fabulous!

If you live in the area or have the opportunity to be in San Francisco between now and June, go see these spectacular paper dresses created by Isabelle de Borchgrave. She is inspired by days gone by but brings them back to life with the detail and intricacies of the finest fabrics and enhancements.

I will be in San Francisco in May and plan to see them for myself. Now our five dresses design isn’t quite as elaborate as Isabelle’s dresses, but ours are quite snappy for that summer social coming in a few months. The Letters from Lilly five dresses design is available on all our stationery products, just like all our designs at Letters from Lilly.

This exhibit can be viewed at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor and runs through June 5, 2011.  The artist will be at the Legion on Saturday demonstrating her techniques for transforming paper into couture for all interested.

Autumn Bouquet

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

inv_autumnbouquet_text1Field flowers are some of my favorites. I’m not a big fan of roses or other natural flowers that closely resemble their plastic immitators. Honestly, my favorite bouquets are the least expensive ones that can be found in the grocery store. Luckily for my husband, I never wish for a dozen roses. Nope, my heart skips a beat when he brings me a bunch of simple, yet stunning sunflowers.

This bouquet, to the left, is perfect for any fall occasion. Whether it’s a wedding, rehearsal dinner or another occasion coming up for you and your family this fall.lindsay021

With autumn here, I’m reminded of the beautiful leaves that fall and line our streets with color. That’s all great until you get the autumn rain and with it comes… mud.

Thus the invention of the aisle runner in chuch for weddings! Did you ever wonder why they pull down the white runner just before the bride walks down the aisle? In the days gone by (and probably today) people drag in all kinds of things from the street.  To keep the bride’s dress beautiful, crisp and white, a runner is pulled down just for her.

Order a beautiful, linen aisle runner for your wedding for all the right reasons; it’s green (meaning green for the earth, not the color of green) so it can be shared. Donate it to your church.  It’s safer; you won’t get your heel caught in plastic (wouldn’t that be awful on the video), and it’s quiet. Have you ever been to a wedding where you can actually hear the bride swishing down the aisle on plastic… ohh. Get the linen, one of my high maintence requests for my own wedding day. But hey, I only ask for grocery store flowers so don’t get on me about the linen aisle runner decades ago! And the church is probably still using it today.

Let’s go to the Fair!

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

It’s the lascorr_merrygoround_textt week of the Del Mar Fair for the year.  The fair that has been happening every year since 1880. It was to be the greatest display of agriculture in California.

Today you’ll find 80 different rides and a variety of food with over 100 booths offering all kinds of typical fair food.  It’s all sure to make your mouth water and your tummy grumble (how about a fried twinkie).

I don’t know a kid who doesn’t love the idea of the fair.  If they don’t want to bungie jump from the top of a crane, they can always enjoy an outdoor concert or take in the educational displays in the buildings surrounding the racetrack. The racetrack and the club within was established with the help of Bing Crosby. Horse racing begins when the fair wraps up later in July.

There is a fun website where you can get more information about merry go rounds, carousels and their history:  jandingo.com is complete with music to feel like you are really there!

The carousel at the fair has beautiful lights and looks especially enticing at night.  A carousel is larger and more permanent having a variety of animals on it to carry one around and around.  A merry-go-round, however traditionally has horses and is smaller than a carousel. How do I know?  I had to do a little research on the difference when I went to name the design we have called the merry go round, shown above.

Our correspondence card shown has the merry go round design and is used for birth announcements, birthday parties, stationery notes and a variety of correspondence for the special child in your life.

April Showers bring May flowers, May flowers bring June celebrations

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

2009-april-027April (Wedding) Showers, bring May flowers (in bouquets down the aisle), May flowimg_2693ers bring June gatherings; graduations, family reunions, birthday celebrations and all kinds of reasons to get together with family and friends.

These flowers you see above are from the Carlesbad Flower Fields where wholesalers, from all over the country, purchase their flowers.  March through May they are in full bloom.  It’s a pretty impressive sight.  When I say you’ll see rows and rows of flowers, I’m not kidding.

How about the birthday cake on the right, how cute is it? It’s beautifully made from flowers.  You can order one from 1-800-flowers and have it sent to someone special.  Lilly received this one from a special friend.  We all enjoyed it for a long time (and without calories I might add).

Flowers is the theme this week, so start your garden if you’re on the east coast, enjoy your garden on the west coast.  On either coast, take time to smell the flowers.

Shown here is our flower cart design. A great design for any spring and summer occasion. Here you see it as a Bridal Shower, but we encourage you to use it for family reunions as well as any warm weather celebration.

Lilly’s Playhouse

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

img_18311I get this question every once in a while about Lilly’s playhouse. “Is there really a Lilly’s playhouse like the design you offer?”

Actually, there is.  It’s a dreamy escape for any little girl, but the tween Lilly is enjoying it more as a retreat from her parents, especially when friends come over.  “It’s a place to go that no one can hear us,” shared Lilly with me, with a giggle.

She has it fully equipped with electricity which lights up the inside with twinkle lights and the outside with Christmas lights, which Lilly feels should be kept up all year long.  It also keeps her refrigerator running so that she can serve cold drinks to her friends. (Don’t get any ideas here, it’s apple juice, I’m the one who fills it).

There’s an IPod for the ever necessary tunes to play a little Hannah Montana, High School Musical or other necessary sounds anyann_lillyshouse_text1 tween enjoys.

The design of Lilly’s playhouse was originally just for Lilly, but I’ve found that lots of people like Lilly’s playhouse for notes.  We have sent some very creative moving announcements using this design as well as house warming parties and baby announcements like the one shown.

It’s the playhouse I would have dreamed of as a child. A place to go that’s quiet and my own.  Maybe I should consider using it while she’s at school!

Here’s a sneak peak at the inside!img_0262 Yes, there’s even wireless service…

Things are starting to Buzz…zz

Friday, April 10th, 2009

There is all kinds of activity around here.  People are buzzing, the air is buzzing. Our bees are certainly buzzing louder than anything!  We have orders coming in for retirement parties (how lovely), bridal showers (how grand), surprise birthday parties (how fun) and my favorite was the elopement (how fabulous)! All asking to use our bumble bee for their special occasions! I love that!

I must say that I love our bumble bees, but only on paper and fabrics or on things like these planters below.  Aren’t they nice? I also adore bumble bee pins.

It might surprise you to know that I have an entire wall, in my house, full of honeycomb.  Right.  Bees make me panic because when I see a bee, I know they are searching out my walls.  We don’t have snow removal here, we have bee removal.  We have taken out bricks in our chimney and had huge honeycombs pulled out.  The first time it was REALLY cool, now… not so much.

So let’s keep the bees to pretty things like planters, stickers, and stationery and keep them far from… me, unless it’s the jewelry… honey.

Buzzz…

This is Knot to Miss

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

There are all kinds of occasions coming up where you could be getting together with the gals for showers; wedding or baby, luncheons for birthdays or upcoming retirements.  Any reason you are celebrating could be introduced to your guests with our orange bow stationery lfl_ann_orangebow1pieces.  The great thing is, it is young and vibrant without being over the top.

Speaking of over the top, because I love that too, look at this fabulous bag to go from spring to summer to fall to winter and all around again.

purse

I like it because it has sturdy handles, it’s thin and comfortable to carry and fits more than what you need for the day. These two items are sure to put a spring in your step for spring.
