Sea Star by the Seashore

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

With over 1,800 species, you can see all kinds of different sea stars in waters all over the world.  These creatures that bring wonder along our salty seashores can live up to 35 years, weigh up to 11 pounds, and measure up to 24 centimeters in width.

Relating more to sand dollars and sea urchins, they aren’t fish, which is why they should be referred to as sea stars, rather than starfish. With no blood supply or brain, they slowly move about the ocean floor with their five arms,  covered with suction cups using them to eat their prey of oysters and clams.

One has to look carefully in the tide pools to see sea stars in our local waters. They camouflage themselves so well, they are a treasure of life in our own backyard.

Letters from Lilly has our own sea star that is on all our products and shown here on our new flat photo card.  Share a photo of your summer holiday with family and friends.  As always, you can order matching return address stickers to go along with the card and the lining (that is always included on all our orders).

Let’s go to the Fair!

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

It’s the lascorr_merrygoround_textt week of the Del Mar Fair for the year.  The fair that has been happening every year since 1880. It was to be the greatest display of agriculture in California.

Today you’ll find 80 different rides and a variety of food with over 100 booths offering all kinds of typical fair food.  It’s all sure to make your mouth water and your tummy grumble (how about a fried twinkie).

I don’t know a kid who doesn’t love the idea of the fair.  If they don’t want to bungie jump from the top of a crane, they can always enjoy an outdoor concert or take in the educational displays in the buildings surrounding the racetrack. The racetrack and the club within was established with the help of Bing Crosby. Horse racing begins when the fair wraps up later in July.

There is a fun website where you can get more information about merry go rounds, carousels and their history:  jandingo.com is complete with music to feel like you are really there!

The carousel at the fair has beautiful lights and looks especially enticing at night.  A carousel is larger and more permanent having a variety of animals on it to carry one around and around.  A merry-go-round, however traditionally has horses and is smaller than a carousel. How do I know?  I had to do a little research on the difference when I went to name the design we have called the merry go round, shown above.

Our correspondence card shown has the merry go round design and is used for birth announcements, birthday parties, stationery notes and a variety of correspondence for the special child in your life.

Tradition

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

Torrey Pines Christian Church by wendyness.Tradition means bringing something from the past into the present.  It can mean a holiday tradition or something that is passed along from one generation to the next.

I was married on Wednesday, for the third time. I can hear you all gasping and wondering how I might have found the time to marry three times. Really, my life is quite simple and I do take the vows of marriage very seriously.  This is why I married my husband, one man, three separate times.

We were married, the first time, twenty years ago in a church in Upstate New York.  In our early twenties, we were both so nervous that I’m not sure I could tell you exactly what I repeated in front of a hundred family and friends to proclaim my love for my husband.  I stood and held both hands of his hands and repeated what was read to me.  I remember walking on the beach, the next day, hundreds of miles away from the silk and tulle and thinking now that it’s all over, I wish I could have the wedding again and really enjoy it… remember it.

So ten years later, we renewed our vows on the beaches of the Outer Banks.  We stood with our toes in the sand together with our two year old daughter, Lilly.  It was totally different than the first time we said our vows, yet we were making a commitment, the same commitment again. As I stood on the beach, I held the hand of Steve, my daughter, and the leash of my labrador, Rex.

Wednesday, the evening of our 20th anniversary, he surprised me and took me to a church here in La Jolla.  We stood together, again with Lilly, and promised to love and cherish one another for the rest of our lives. Standing at the alter of the little chapel, I held Steve and Lilly’s hands and a fist full of pink gerber daisies.

We think of weddings as the tradition, but I think it is marriage that is a tradition. Marriage is a tradition that should be brought from past to present to remind and reinforce the bond between two people.  To make the promise of love and commitment to one another was memorable, but to see my 12 year old daughter taking it all in… was a gift.

Create traditions within your own families that include your children.  They will take those traditions and make them memories which will last long beyond your lifetime.

enc_weddingcake_textWe only had wedding cake at our first wedding, but it seems like the best design to tie to this blog post.

I do love to use these gift enclosure cards when sending a gift to a bride-to-be. They are colorful without being over the top. This design makes a great stationery gift for a bride also. I’ve sent a stationery set, along with an engraved letter opener, for a memorable gift for the bride and groom.

Summer is here!

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Aaahhh, finally, the time is here to just… relax. No school bells to hurry to, no homework to follow up on, and no rushing off to school activities.  Everything is quieter, less stressful, and more enjoyable.

Longer days mean more time for walks after dinner. Warmer nights mean outdoor movies at Scripps Park in the village. Summer means more casual meals and more time to see friends. Sleepovers can happen without the worry of kids being exhausted for school on Monday, even if the sleepover is Friday night. I love summer.

While you are sitting by the pool, on the dock, or at the beach, have fun using our swimming monkey design on our stationery.  Maybe you are writing to thank someone for summer fun this past weekend or perhaps you are getting in touch with someone on the other coast.  This monkey is a welcome addition to our growing offering of designs.

Do you know where the largest swimming pool is? Chile.  It’s 1,000 yards long. Wow, I think I’ll just stay at the beach… or the sprinkler.

Organic Gardening

Friday, June 5th, 2009

I’ve heard a lot about people starting their own vegetable gardens lately.  I think Lilly and I have come up with the perfect compromise for having our favorite organic, green vegetables, getting a huge variety,  and not sweating over the soil.  Easy gardening, is that possible, you say?

We are now buying our produce from a farmer who offers a Community Supported Agriculture program.

This is how it works.  The farmer puts together a box of their fresh, organic vegetables.  Each week, we pick up our box at a drop off location near our house.  Inside the box, we will find an assortment of vegetables that will compliment our family’s meals.  Each week we’ll find different things.  For example, there might be fresh tomatoes and zucchini, but also things like fresh herbs and edible flowers. Won’t that be fun to add a special blossom on our plates! Each week the box will change, giving us the important dietary variations that we all hear we should eat, but have a difficult time actually doing. Until now, I have picked out the SAME things every week; broccoli, spinach, green beans, zucchini, mushrooms, tomatoes… same old, same old.  All organic, but I certainly don’t experiment much.

The greatest thing is that our local farmer has a website that will have recipes on how to cook the more unusual vegetables we will find in our delivery box.   This is the summer to experiment. I can’t wait to pick up the first box on Tuesday!

If you ever have an ingredient and don’t quite know what to do with it, go to www.epicurious.com.  In my opinion, it’s the best cooking site online.  You can enter in any ingredient in the search box and it will come up with a variety of recipes. The site even takes into account gluten free and other dietary restrictions, which in our family is a big necessity.

So we aren’t doing all the work, but we are helping out our local farmer by supporting their farm, doing our part to limit fuel usage for transporting produce, and staying away from pesticides, all while adding a greater variety in our diets. Oh, did I mention it’s less expensive too?

We are planting our own green beans, but who knows when these will bear fruit! It’s all a learning experience, but thanks to our local farmer, we won’t starve.

Packing my bags

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

It’s that time of year when I pack my bags and head east for the National Stationery Show. As I talked about (typed) earlier, it’s my fifteenth year attending the show.  It’s a great place to reconnect with the industry as a whole and get the creative juices flowing.  I always return home with a bag and brain full of ideas.

Don’t worry, it’s not all work.  I’ll be seeing high school friends and some college pals.  That’s the great thing about NYC, everyone knows someone in New York.  So tomorrow morning I get on a jet plane for my full day of travel.

Speaking of travel, below is our airplane design on a baby announcement.

The airplane is a great design not only for announcing the arrival of your little boy, but also for birthday parties and note cards.

Letters from Lilly is proud to be shown in the latest Stationery Trends magazine.  Our bridal bouquet is on page 13 as one of their Fresh Picks!  Be sure to pick up a copy at the National Stationery Show or on their site www.stationerytrendsmag.com.

A great publication for our industry and we’re proud to be mentioned in the latest issue! Thanks Stationery Trends.

Safe travels and I’ll be back in touch upon my return next week.

Travel Tip: Give your child a drink during take-off & landing. It’s the best things for their ears and they will also be relaxed.
If your child is big, then carry cotton or ask for earplugs as soon as you board the aircraft. Make use of them for take-off then save them for landing as the crew may not have any fresh ones left by then. This helps the kids tremendously if they don’t know how to pop their ears. Happy May Day!

Friday, May 1st, 2009

May Day is on May 1st and denotes the end of winter, a time to celebrate the beginning of spring, and the coming of summer.

It’s celebrated around the world by dancing around the May pole. In some villages part of the celebration comes from bringing the May pole in from the local forest and seeing how high the May pole will stand.  Other villages have permanent poles to stand tall throughout the year.

It is customary to celebrate May Day with flowers.  Just in time, we have a new design with spring flowers to share with you. The spring bouquet is shown below on an invitation.

 ann_springbouquet_text

Our spring bouquet is just the right design for any spring occasion; graduation, Mother’s Day brunch (or stationery as a gift), First Communion, baby announcement…the list goes on.

So enjoy May Day and wash your face with some May Dew… another tradition from days gone by.

15 Years! Where has the time gone?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Fifteen years ago, I was getting ready to go to my first National Stationery Show in New York.

I wasn’t going as Letters from Lilly (yet) and I wasn’t even going as a retailer (yet). I was going as just me.  I was going as someone who loved stationery and wanted to begin a retail business and needed the necessary tools to do it.

Soon after, I started my own retail business offering all kinds of beautiful papers to my customers.  Each year I would return to the National Stationery Show to find more, new, and different products that would entice my customers in the months ahead. This is a photo from my retail space.

ne

I never would have predicted that my first customer, in 1995, would take the reins ten years later.  This enabled me to continue my career from retailer to wholesaler.

Today we have grown to have over 1,700 products that are sold worldwide.  We focus our marketing efforts differently now and althought we no longer display at the National Stationery Show, it’s a show to see.

I hope I will see many of you there as I celebrate 15 years of my career in the stationery industry.

enc_logofairy_textHere is our well known logo fairy, the design that introduced Letters from Lilly years back and continues to represent the announcement of new designs, products and stationery items on the horizon.

Enclosure cards make great hostess gifts and of course come with our signature, lined envelopes.

National Park Week, April 18-26, 2009

Monday, April 20th, 2009

You’ve probably heard that Earth Day is on Wednesday.  Did you know that it’s National Park Week all week long?

905-california-scene

It’s true. Check out www.nps.gov for all kinds of activities and information about thing going on this week around our country.

If you have kids, they can check out becoming a Junior Ranger.

There’s a great map on the home page that you can hover your cursor over any state and see National Parks within that state.

In 1962, when the idea of Earth Day started forming in Gaylord Nelson’s mind, I wonder if he ever imagined that we would be where we are in 2009.

I am one who tries very hard to look at the glass half full.  I like hearing stories about the earth being more than 70% ocean. Our largest National Park is 20,000 square miles (Wrangell-St. Elias, in southcentral Alaska) and all the National Parks make up 84 million acres.  Numbers like these give me hope that we haven’t crushed the planet.

This is a good week to start some of those habits that really can turn into things you do all the time, without even thinking.

-Keep reusable grocery bags in your car. Put them on the floor of the front seat if that helps you remember to use them.   Don’ t just use them in the grocery store, use them wherever you shop.

-Recycle in your home. It really doesn’t take that much effort. Consider cutting back your newspaper subscription to only the days you read it.

-Use cloth napkins, not paper. They are more colorful, last a very long time, can be used for rags when they start to look like them and they really don’t make that much laundry.

-Put this as a tag line on your email.  Remind others to be mindful every time you press send.

P Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail

So there are four things that we can all do, to do our part in keeping what we have beautiful.

Enjoy the National Parks Week, do something on Earth Day http://www.earthday.net/ and relish the outdoors all year long with our pinetrees gatefold notecards.

Lilly’s Playhouse

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

img_18311I get this question every once in a while about Lilly’s playhouse. “Is there really a Lilly’s playhouse like the design you offer?”

Actually, there is.  It’s a dreamy escape for any little girl, but the tween Lilly is enjoying it more as a retreat from her parents, especially when friends come over.  “It’s a place to go that no one can hear us,” shared Lilly with me, with a giggle.

She has it fully equipped with electricity which lights up the inside with twinkle lights and the outside with Christmas lights, which Lilly feels should be kept up all year long.  It also keeps her refrigerator running so that she can serve cold drinks to her friends. (Don’t get any ideas here, it’s apple juice, I’m the one who fills it).

There’s an IPod for the ever necessary tunes to play a little Hannah Montana, High School Musical or other necessary sounds anyann_lillyshouse_text1 tween enjoys.

The design of Lilly’s playhouse was originally just for Lilly, but I’ve found that lots of people like Lilly’s playhouse for notes.  We have sent some very creative moving announcements using this design as well as house warming parties and baby announcements like the one shown.

It’s the playhouse I would have dreamed of as a child. A place to go that’s quiet and my own.  Maybe I should consider using it while she’s at school!

Here’s a sneak peak at the inside!img_0262 Yes, there’s even wireless service…
