Puppy! Tugging me Away

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

There’s a new puppy in the house. Allie joined our family last Saturday. She’s weighing in at 2 pounds, 1 ounce. Being a Labrador Retriever person, this is a new deal for me. She is a lap dog in every sense of the word. She loves people and immediately falls asleep when she’s on any lap in town.Allie

Yesterday was our first trip to the vet. I immediately declared myself a large dog person and went on and on about my 14 year old lab that we still miss terribly, even after him being gone 8 years. I told her that even people who don’t like dogs liked our Rex. He loved to play frisbee, swim in the lake and ocean, carry huge logs and truly thought he was a person. I’m not the only one to say that either.

She looked at me and nodded. “I understand you are a big dog person, but do you know this is NOT ever going to be a big dog?” Then I explained that this dog is really for Lilly and that we wanted a dog that would always be able to sit on her lap, even in her wheelchair. She gave a huge nod, understanding.

Then she dove into my list of to dos to take care of this little dog. Cleaning because they are low to the ground, brushing teeth because little dogs get gum disease, extracting teeth because they often get extras, multiple feedings during the day because they are small, lots of water because their little bodies can seize with too much activity. Seriously? Then she said, “The most important thing I can tell you is to keep this dog on a leash, even in your backyard, especially at night. There are owls waiting in the trees to snap her up and I don’t want your daughter losing her lap dog to an owl.”

Holy moly, what have I gotten myself into? The she wrapped up the visit by asking if I wanted her micro chipped. “Why, so we can find the owl?”
